Model Farms, Callenberg and Ernstfarm

ErnstfarmIn the years from 1863 to 1864, Georg Rothbart built the Callenberg Model Farm by order of Duke Ernst II. It serves as an agricultural/chemical test station and is one of the earliest model farms in Germany based on the English model. Its role model is the model farm in Windsor that was built by the brother of Ernst II, the prince consort Albert, in 1850. Today, the Rudolf-Steiner School is located in the buildings. Due to the positive development, Duke Ernst II had another model farm - today's Ernstfarm - erected in Coburg-Scheuerfeld based on the English model.

Goldbergsee

At the gates of Coburg in the direction of Beiersdort, a reservoir is currently being constructed called Goldbergsee, which will have several functions. The most important one is its task as a flood-control reservoir.  Every year when the snow starts to melt in the upper regions of the Thuringia Forest, there is a risk of flooding in Coburg. To make sure that there is no flooding, the Sulzbach will be dammed in the future to make Goldbergsee. The animal world will find a new refuge here. The so-called biotope in the northern area with its reed bed will form the "Vogelfreistätte Glender Wiesen" nature reserve. People are also actively discovering their new local recreation area by hiking and cycling. Completion of Goldbergsee is planned for 2009. Above Goldbergsee is the summer cottage of the famous poet Friedrich Rückert.
